Lao PDR is a small country in Southeast Asia that has a number of specific characteristics such as mainly mountainous landscape, low population density, an ethnically diversified population and very low human capital. To date, empirical studies on access and quality of education in Lao PDR are still very limited. One of the major problems that Laos has is providing quality schools for their people. The International Royal Academy of the United Nations (IRAUN) has plans to fund the building of more than 1000 new schools across Laos and to create a new teachers college at Dondok Campus of the Lao National University including student residences.
Lao people are resilient and wonderful people but deserve more opportunity. Note that even in schools that are deplorable, they attend in uniform and are willing students. Lao has suffered terribly from the Vietnam war and the Government does not have the income needed to meet the educational needs of their people. IRAUN has undertaken the job or raising the money to build more than 1000 schools in Laos that will look like this at a cost of US$800,000,000. IRAUN will replace the schools we see above, with schools like those below.
